The Sims 4: How to Have Roommates (Discover University)
We have all been waiting years for the ability to have roommates that don’t need to be part of our household and guys, it’s finally here! You are now able to have a roommate who will help pay your bills.
Roommates have been added as a part of The Sims 4: Discover University but they aren’t limited to only being in University housing, you can have a roommate on any lot in any world.
These roommates are going to give you a couple hundred dollars a week to help you pay your bills which can be extremely helpful in paying for your living expenses. This is going to be epic for story telling and add a new level of stress to the game.
To be able to ask someone to be your roommate, or place an advertisement, you need to have an extra bed in your house that you can assign to this roommate.

How to Get a Roommate
There are two ways for you to get a roommate added to your household, the first way is to just ask someone who is your friend to be your roommate. They may not say yes, but it’s always worth a shot.
To do this, you can click on someone you know and go to the Roommate menu, then choose Ask to be New Roommate and your friend may agree and move right in! They may also say Thanks for the offer, but I already have a home, which is a little disappointing.
Thankfully, there is always the option of posting an advertisement to get a random roommate that you don’t currently know.
To do this, you need to click on a cell phone or computer and under the household menu you’ll see place advertisement for roommates.
Once it’s been placed, you’ll get a notification saying “An advertisement has been placed for a new roommate. Fingers crossed for perfect roommates only!”
Over the next few days there will be random sims that come into your home, which is odd, but these are your potential roommates. When you scroll your mouse above them it will say potential roommate above them.
You will get to talk to your potential roommate and get to know them before making a decision, be sure to choose get to know as an interaction so you can learn some of their traits. You may not want a slob roommate for example!
If you meet a roommate that you feel would be a good fit, you can choose accept as new roommate when you click on them and they will move right in. You want to make sure their room is clean and there is room for them to possibly put down a few of their own items.
Note: If you want to have more than one roommate, you need to have enough beds! You can get more than one roommate at a time.
Living with Roommates
One of the best things about the roommate system in The Sims 4 is that every roommate is entirely different with their own personality and quirks. They are going to be around a lot of the time and some of them never leave the house.
Some roommates are going to be extremely clean, and clean up after you all the time. Some roommates are going to be extremely messy and leave piles of food and dirty dishes everywhere.
Your roommates may throw unexpected parties at all hours of the night inviting everyone they know, or they may invite over their friend or romantic partner whenever they want. It’s really like having a real roommate.
The best part about roommates is that they are going to give your sim money every couple of days. This is going to be extremely helpful in maying for your bills or rent if you live in an apartment.
The amount you’re going to get is going to depend on how much your bills are, and how many people are living in your household.
Getting a Roommate to Move Out
Your roommate may decide to actually move out on their own, one day I had my sim and her boyfriend kissing in the roommates bedroom and he immediately told me he was leaving and I got this notification:
When this happens the sim will usually leave within the day, and you can either choose to put up an advertisement for a new roommate or live alone.
You can also choose to ask a roommate to leave under the roommates social menu.
Roommate Notes
Once in a while you may see a note next to your bed on the floor that just seems to appear out of nowhere. These notes are from your wonderful roommates!
They can be mean notes about you not cleaning up dishes, or just other random drama notes. They’re really funny so I suggest reading them!
Final Thoughts

I do not have the option to place an advertisement for a roommate. Neither on a computer not on my phone it just simply isn’t there. How can I fix that?
Do you have Discover University installed? I’m pretty sure it’s only available if you have that pack. If you do and it’s not there, I’m honestly not sure how to fix it 🙁
It might be that you don’t have enough beds on your lot! Try adding more and see.
I have enough beds and have placed an advert but it’s been over a week and nothing happened?
If you have pets in your household, they count towards the bed count, so if you have 2 beds but 1 sim and 1 pet, there’s no available bed for a roomate. Try placing an extra bed somewhere random and then when the roomate moves in, you can sell it.
You have to click the house icon on the phone if you have enough available rooms it’ll let you advertise roommates
I clicked on my sim friend but there is no roommate menu to ask him to be my new roommate (I already installed DU), could you show me where it exactly is?
I found that I couldn’t ask a friend Sim to be my roommate unless they were in the world as a playable character(which is odd because posting an ad brings roommates that are NPC) after I added the sim into the world from unplayable, or “not in world”, the roommate option came up for me!
No roommates are turning up at my house with three beds, 2 showers, 2 toilets and 2 sinks and a kitchen
Do you have cats or dogs ? The game counts them as persons too.
I have an extra bed in my house, but still not getting an option to add my sims boyfriend as a roommate. I can’t figure out why it’s not working.
First question, do you have Discover University installed? I’m pretty sure it’s only for DU. If you have it and it’s still not working, maybe try reloading the game? I really don’t know why it wouldn’t be showing up.
Make sure you have a bed for your sim’s roommate, then try again.
Apparently you can’t have Professors as roommates or as club members. That sucks!
Hahahahaha, I can only imagine why you’d want to hang with your professor 😉 It makes sense to me, a definite conflict of interest.
I keep placing an advertisement for a roommate but no one ever shows up. I am able to add someone I know, but it never works with the advertisement.
Everytime I’ve tested it, they show up the next day or the day after. It’s never been immediate. Not sure if that’s the problem!?
I’m not sure what the problem is, I’ve tried several times, cancelling and re-activating. Waited several sim days every time.
My sim’s boyfriend REFUSES to move in! Every time I ask him, he says, “No thanks, I already have a home.” I have tried everything- being in a very confident mood, our friendly and romantic bonds are at 100%, I’ve waited a day or two, I’ve restarted the game, no luck! Does anyone know of a way to increase the probability of them saying yes? Once they say “No” will they always say no? It’s funny that I’ve NEVER had another Sim, playable or not, say no to major life events (relationships, woohoo, babies, marriage, becoming a vampire, etc.) except for being a roommate, of all things. Every other time, Sims always say yes!
Hahahah this would be SO ANNOYING. I have no idea what the odds are of them moving in, I’ve only gotten sims who aren’t in the world to move in by asking them to. I wish I could help!
You need to make sure they’re “homeless” otherwise they can’t move in without a mod.
I evicted my sims that I wanted to be my roommates, so they are just in my library now. I invited them over and asked to be my roommate, each one said “I have other people in my household depending on me.”

DO YOU HAVE ANY PETS IN YOUR HOUSE? I have a cat in my household and 2 beds. I couldn’t put an ad for roommates because the cat was considered a household member and needed a bed ???? you’ll have to remove pets from the household.
also found another trick: if you want to keep the pets, take the extra beds for the pets and size them down then put them directly under another bed. then they are hidden. Also if anyone happens to use them it still looks like they’re using the normal bed above them. LiFe hAcKs bAbY
Does anyone know how to choose the sims you want to live in your dorm with you, my sims has a group of friends that I want to go to Uni with her but I dont want them to be a part of my household.

To those having issues with not being able to place an ad despite having available beds, if you have any pets in the game, the game counts them as Sims that require a bed. So if you have 2 Sims, 2 pets, and 1 double bed with 2 single beds, all of them are ‘occupied’ because the pets count as taking up a single bed each next to the two Sims taking up the double bed. Toddlers seem to count as needing an adult bed too, even though they don’t use adult beds. EA is aware of this issue but the fix until now is to add a bed for each pet and toddler somewhere on the lot, even if nobody will ever use them.
I added dummy beds to a non-accessible basement level on a house lot, but in apartments you’ll need to find a way to add extra beds for the time being if you have pets/toddlers.
Had a roommate complain that their needs are not being met while I had everything in my home to support them. Another roommate was annoying because they kept trying to talk to me while i was busy. And out of no where me and a roommate ended our relationship without warning. How does a roommate not have all their needs met? And also why did my roommate end the relationship with no warning? Is there a roommate that actually knows how to take care of themselves?
It’s smart to have two bathrooms because if they try to satisfy their needs while you’re in the shower for example they can get mad. I also think you need a TV? I’m not entirely sure what things are absolutely necessary
Hey I ve just moved into a dorm and am having to control my roommates as well, is there a way I have to only control my Sim?
If, once you have placed your advertisement you decide that you no longer want to look for a roommate, simply repeat the process again to cancel the advertisement. Once you have placed your advertisement you will need to make sure that you have space to accommodate a new roommate. Whether this is their own room or a bed and some simple furniture in an existing bedroom.
I changed the dorm to female only thinking that the male roommates that were already living there would move out. They didn’t. So now i’m trying to get them to move out and nothing is working! I even tried to have my sim kiss her boyfriend in their room and on their bed and nothing is working. Any suggestions?
It can take a few Sim days for applications to arrive. You will be able to tell which Sims are coming to meet your Sim as they will have Potential Roommate above their name.
When you have decided on the Sim you want to become your new roommate, simply click on them and navigate to the Roommate menu. You can then use the Accept as new Roommate option. As soon as you select a Sim to be your Roommate your advert will be closed and taken down. The chosen Sim will also move straight in.
i odo have an issue. some of my sims have neds they say, i have had a few says that they cant take care of themselves and end up leavin? how do i find what they want or what s missing for them to feel at ease?
Anyone figure out how to fix this? I cannot place an advertisement for roommates, I have enough beds (even added extra to see if it was a bug). I DONT HAVE PETS. I HAVE THE DU PACK.
Just a question. Do roommates furnish their own rooms, or is that on the landlord, played sim?
If by “furnish” you mean actual furniture then no, they won’t furnish their own room.
They do bring their own little trinkets and clutter items though.
Technically, the only thing they need in their room is a bed, as long as there are a kitchen, a bathroom and possibly a source for entertainment (TV, computer) on the lot, though I’m not entirely sure about that one.
I would advise you to fully furnish their room, just for realistic gameplay. Otherwise, there will just be a bed and a couple of clutter items in there.
