The Sims 4: Modern Menswear Kit Overview
Our latest kit for The Sims 4, released at the end of 2021 is the Modern Menswear Kit that features gorgeous knits and fun jackets and some really beautiful skirts. This clothing kit was a collaboration with a London based designed named Stefan Cooke and is all about pushing style boundaries and really bending what menswear means.
Modern Menswear Description
With every new pack in the game we get a description created by EA to describe the pack for players and give you a little more information before buying. The modern menswear kit has a description that reads:
“Revolutionize the classics with The Sims™ 4 Modern Menswear Kit*, featuring a thought-provoking, accessible collection designed by Stefan Cooke. Reimagined shapes redefine traditionally masculine fashions, while textiles and patterns elevate each unique piece for today’s style.
- Get into the Details: Update your Sim’s closet with trendy wardrobe staples. Fluid shapes add intrigue to any outfit, while zippers, cutouts, and pleats lend everyday outfits a touch of the contemporary.
- Experiment with Style: Refined and subversive, these looks reinvigorate the basics. Play with scalloped or pleated skirts and latticed sweaters, or pair a polished shirtdress with iconic loafers to model up-and-coming culture.”
What’s Included with the Modern Menswear Kit?
This kit includes 24 pieces of clothing that are all tagged masculine in the create-a-sim catalog, you’ll find a ton of fun items like knitted sweaters, jackets, and even fun skirt outfits for male sims. Some of the standout items include the two jackets, and the sweaters as these are extremely versatile pieces.
One of my biggest annoyances with the items in this pack is the t-shirt with cuffed sleeves full-body outfit. Why is it a problem for me? Well, that t-shirt is extremely versatile but having it with those tights and only those tights isn’t my favourite, plus you can’t use it without the boots, which isn’t something that works for me. I want to be able to choose my own shoes, even for full body outfits.
Another issue is that these items do not work for feminine frames at all, which is a major issue with The Sims in general. At this point in 2021, I wish EA would start making two versions for both masculine and feminine sims so all clothing is available when you un-tag masculine or feminine.
Is The Sims 4: Modern Menswear Worth It?
Anytime EA gives us new content, the biggest question players have is whether or not it is worth it to purchase. For the modern menswear kit (or any CAS kits) it really depends on your personal style. The clothing is nice and definitely unique, so it majorly depends on whether or not you think you’ll actually use it.
You don’t want to purchase a kit just for the sake of purchasing but never actually go in and play with the kit or use the items, so it’s more of an ask yourself if you like it than an is it worth it question.
Modern Menswear Controversy
For a lot of players when they think modern menswear this pack missed the mark, and there have been many people in the community with comments like “real men don’t wear skirts” and other awful takes that completely forget about the inclusivity the sims strives for.
One thing I have to mention in this overview for modern menswear is that just because you won’t wear a skirt, or don’t want men around you to wear skirts, that doesn’t mean that it isn’t manly to wear one. Clothing is a personal preference and men are entirely allowed to wear whatever they want, and EA bringing in a designer like Stefan Cooke to add these types of items to the game is awesome.
Most of the male clothes in The Sims 4 are very gender conforming and fit the outdated view of what a man should look like, and allowing these clothes to be in the game will help so many young boys realize that they can wear anything they want, and they aren’t confined to ill-fitting jeans and polo shirts for the rest of their lives.
If this pack isn’t for you, don’t buy it, but don’t say things like “men don’t wear skirts” because you never know who may hear you and hold that with them forever and never truly get to be themselves.
Should EA Work With Luxury Brands?
Something I’ve seen echoed a few times in the community (and thought myself) is that EA shouldn’t work with these luxury brands because these clothes are extremely unattainable for most players of the game. Most players who play The Sims 4 would much rather see a collaboration with a brand like H&M or Forever 21 that is more attainable to them, and the clothes may be more wearable in game.
This same controversy happened when The Sims collaborated with Moschino for The Sims 4: Moschino Stuff, those sims sweaters Moschino sold at the time were hundreds of dollars and most players just couldn’t make that happen. Maybe think about collaborating with brands your player base could actually afford once in a while.
Final Thoughts
Whether or not you like the pack, this is a fun addition to The Sims 4 and is great for inclusivity in the game for so many players. These outfits are really fun and can add some new high-fashion flare to your sims instead of boring polo shirts and button downs that we seem to get over and over for masculine sims. Happy playing!
