10 Simple Ways to Make The Sims 4 More Fun
I’ve been playing The Sims since the year 2000, and a lot of my friends wonder how. They are all convinced that I would get bored eventually, but honestly, it’s all in how you play. There are people who get bored after 20 minutes, and then there’s me. 6 hours into a deep Saturday sims binge for the 1000th time in my life.
I have so many ideas on how you can make The Sims 4 more interesting but these are my 10 tried and true ideas that have always worked for me.
Explore Aspirations You’ve Never Tried
There are dozens of aspirations to choose from and every time you add new expansions you’ll get even more. However, from what I’ve seen a lot of players will choose a small group of aspirations that they like to play through and use those over and over again.
Try out some of the weird aspirations! Make your sim become an Expert Nectar Maker from Horse Ranch or the Fabulously Filthy aspiration from Bust The Dust! There are so many weird ones to explore that might open up some really cool new gameplay.
Try a New Challenge
There are dozens of challenges out there for you to play through that all have different goals and styles of gameplay. These challenges will have specific rules laid out that you can follow and a lot of them even have forums or reddit posts where you can share your progress.
If you want to find a new challenge for your game, check out this list of awesome challenges you should try!
Let Your Sims Be Poor
One of the biggest things I’ve done over time is stop using money cheats as often. Yup. You heard that right. I am someone who uses money cheats very sparingly because I want my game to be more difficult because it makes it more interesting.
Why not start with a sim living on an empty lot with 0 simoleons? Or have a family of 8 living in a one bedroom house? All of this adds challenges like sims peeing on the floor because there’s too many sims trying to use the bathroom or your sim setting their stove on fire and burning half their belongings down when they only have 5 simoleons left over. These types of things make the game so much more fun!
Give Your Sims Bad Traits
Something I find myself doing a lot is making my sims good people always. This means they get traits like Loves The Outdoors, Creative, Good, Cheerful, but I avoid things like Evil because I want them to be good people. However, doing this is BORING.
Making your sims have some bad traits and even adding sims who are just bad people into your save files makes your game so much more interesting and adds some interesting gameplay without you even having to do anything.
Download Custom Content
I’m a big user of custom content because it makes my sims so much cuter which makes me want to spend more time in the game. They get to have more interesting and trendy clothes without me having to spend money on tons of new packs all the time.
If you want to jump into the world of custom content but don’t know where to start, here a few articles you can check out to look at some of the cute goodies that are happening lately.
Leave Your Lot
Something I can often fall into is never leaving my lot and just hanging around at home with my sims. This makes the game feel so uninteresting but there is so much to explore and things you’ve probably never seen! Have you been to forgotten grotto? Have you collected all the frogs? Have you pet all the dogs in Brindleton Bay?
There are so many things you can do throughout the game that open up new interesting gameplay concepts and ideas that will change your life!
Play Through a Legacy
A legacy challenge is one of the oldest challenges in the book, and it is still so popular years later. The basics of a legacy challenge is that you play through your sim’s family for ten generations. That’s all you need to do to call it a legacy, but there are rules you can add to make it more complicated.
If you’ve never played a legacy challenge before, you can check out the basics here and learn everything you need from the creator of the legacy challenge.
Download Someone Else’s Save File
The best part about The Sims is that there is such a huge community of talented people out there creating amazing things. Did you know you can actually download someone else’s save file into your game?
This is an incredible thing to do because they will have rebuilt homes, filled up Newcrest, added new sims with interesting back stories and so much more. It’s such a fun way to see the game in a different light. Why not try out this awesome save file and see the game differently?
Add Silly Rules
There are no rules with The Sims 4 which is the best part about the game, it’s so open-ended that you can do literally whatever you want. So, you can add rules like:
- A sim in my family needs to die every 10 days
- This makes it so you need to get your sims married and move in new sims so you have enough people to send off to the Grim Reaper
- Every sim in this family needs to die in a different way
- This gets you to explore all the wild death types from the Murphy Bed to Electrocution
- Each sim needs to work through 3 aspirations in their life
- This allows your sims to be more interesting, have varied interests and lets you dig into so many types of gameplay
Adding little rules like this changes the way you look at your sims and your gameplay and honestly makes it so much more fun.
Download Gameplay Mods
If you’re playing on a PC or Mac you have the ability to add incredible mods to your game that can change everything. Gameplay mods are so much fun because they can add things like an apocalypse or new family gameplay. There is something for every type of player so diving into mods is a great way to make the game more fun, for free!
