The Sims 4: Gardening Guide and Plant List

Gardening is probably the most complicated of all of the skills in The Sims 4 and takes a lot longer to explain than the rest. It’s definitely one of the most fun to master, and can reap some really awesome benefits if you stick it out.

In this guide we are going to discuss all the steps of the gardening skill, as well as an epic plant list that can help you finish your gardening collection.

Traits That Help With Gardening

If you’re really serious about making your sim a gardener, you should definitely give them the Freelance Botanist Aspiration. This aspiration focuses only on the gardening skill. This means you’ll be able to work on the aspiration while being able to buy good rewards like Green Thumb from the reward store.

As for traits, you should make sure to choose the Loves Outdoors Trait for your sim. This is a great option because your sim is going to spend all of their time outside gardening, and you want to make sure they’re having a good time.

Gardening Skill Levels

Gardening Skill Level 1

At the first level of the gardening skill, your sim will be able to plant, water, weed, and harvest plants. They will also be able to purchase starter seed packets on the computer. They can read books on gardening, however, the best way to earn the skill is through doing, not reading.

Gardening Skill Level 2

When your sim progresses to the 2nd level of the gardening skill they will now be able to research gardening on the computer. When you do this, you may get a focused moodlet which can help in gardening.

Gardening Skill Level 3

At level 3 of the gardening skill your sim can now fertilize their plants. We’ll talk more about fertilizing later, but it can be extremely helpful to creating higher quality plants.

Gardening Skill Level 4

When your sim hits Level 4 of the gardening skill they’ll unlock the ability to purchase seasonal fall and spring seed packets if you have seasons installed, these are helpful for planning your garden to have crops available all year. You’ll also be able to now talk to plants, this means your sim can gain their social need while never having to speak to sims again!

Gardening Skill Level 5

At gardening level 5 your sim will unlock the ability to take a cutting and graft to other plants. We’ll talk more about that later! You’ll also unlock winter and summer seasonal seed packs if you have seasons installed.

Gardening Skill Level 6

When your sim hits gardening level 6 you’ll be able to weed larger areas instead of just single plants. This makes taking care of your garden much quicker.

Gardening Skill Level 7

At level 7 of the gardening skill, you’ll unlock the ability to tend garden. This makes it so your sim can weed and water their entire garden with just one click. You’ll also unlock the uncommon seed packets and farmer seed packets.

Gardening Skill Level 8

When your sim reaches level 8 of gardening they’ll unlock the ability to super sell this is nice because you’ll be able to sell tons of plants at once without the need to spend time harvesting. Your sim can now pay §100 to revive a dead plant.

Gardening Skill Level 9

When you reach level 9 of the gardening skill you won’t get any new interactions for gardening, however, you’ll start gardening so much faster. You’ll find your sim weeding and watering with ease.

Gardening Skill Level 10

At level 10 of gardening, you’ll unlock rare seed packets. These are expensive at §1,000 a pack, but they can earn you a ton and may even have a cowplant berry in them if you need a friend!

How to Plant

Planting in The Sims 4 is quite easy. Once you have a plant in your inventory you just need to drag the plant from your sim’s inventory into either a planter box or directly onto the ground. You can fit one plant per grid square if you decide to plant on the ground.

Then, you can get your sim to click on a single plant and choose plant. This will get them to plant any produce that is currently on. the ground without stopping, so it’s best to place all the plantable items before hitting plant.

Tending To Your Plants

Everyday you’ll have at least one plant to take care of, whether it be weeding, watering, or spraying for bugs. Thankfully, if you have The Sims 4: Seasons, the rain will water your plants for you and make gardening really easy.

If you don’t feel like taking care of your garden on your own, you also have the option to hire a gardener under the services options on your sim’s phone.

Spraying for Bugs

Occasionally, you’ll find a small swarm of bugs surrounding one of your plants, don’t worry! There is an easy solution. You can spray the plants for bugs and they will easily be removed.

Fertilizing Your Plants

When your sim reaches level 3 of the gardening skill you’ll be given the option to start fertilizing your plants. Using fertilizer will help you increase the quality of your plants quicker and make them less likely to die if you ignore them for a day or two.

I’ve always found that fish are the best fertilizers, especially great qualtiy fish! However, if you don’t want to build a fishing skill while also working on gardening, you can always just use some of your less valuable plants to fertilize your garden as well.

You can also use Growfruit as a fertilizer which you can find in the rare seed packets. You can’t fertilize your plants every day, there is a few days of a cool down to wait.

Evolving Your Plants

There are 5 levels of quality that your plants can have. They are normal, nice, excellent, magnificent, and perfect. To get your plant to go from one level to the other, you just need to take good care of the plants for a few days until they eventually start to sparkle.

You can click on a sparkling plant and click evolve. This will bring them from one level in quality to the next. When you evolve your plants they will be worth more money, so if you plan to. earn money from gardening, evolving them is a really important part.

Harvesting Your Plants

Your plants are going to sprout and become eligible to be harvested. If you haven’t gotten to the point of being able to super sell yet, you’ll need to harvest your plants if you want to sell them or if you want to plant more crops on your lot.

You can just click on a single plant and choose harvest and the plants will end up in your sim’s inventory. You can drag the plans onto the ground to plant them, or drag them to the sale box in the inventory to make money.

Using Beekeeping to Help Your Garden

If you have The Sims 4: Seasons, you may want to consider adding beekeeping to your household if you want to have a great garden. If you place a. beekeeping box in the middle of your garden, any plant within 5 grid squares will get a boost from the bees. This will help make your plants grow stronger and have better quality.

Grafting Your Plants

When your sim reaches level 7 of the gardening skill they’ll unlock the ability to start grafting plants together. This gives you the ability to take a piece of one plant and connect it to another to create a completely different plant. This is the only way for you to get a number of plants without cheats, so it’s an important thing to understand.

To be able to graft plants together, you need to click on the first of the two plants and choose take cutting and then click on the other plant and choose graft. The result will be one of two things, either you’ll end up with a plant that produces two types of produce or it will become an entirely different plant.

Grafting Combinations

Common Plant Grafting Combinations

  • Graft Sage on Basil to get Parsley
  • Graft a Blue Bell on a Strawberry to get a Grape
  • Graft a Pear on a Lemon to get Plantain

Rare Plant Grafting Combinations

  • Graft a Pomegranate on an Orchid for a Death Flower
  • Graft a Dragonfruit on a Snapdragon for a Cow Berry
  • Graft a Lily on a Snapdragon for an Orchid
  • Graft a Cherry on an Apple for a Pomegranate
  • Graft a Strawberry on a Snapdragon for a Dragonfruit
  • Graft a Tulip on a Chrysanthemum for Birds of Paradise
  • Graft a Rose on a Grape for Bonsai Buds

Eating Your Plants

Plants aren’t just for selling for a profit, your sims can actually eat the produce in their inventory. This is great for a nice snack, especially for vegetarian sims. Depending on the quality of the plant, you can get different length happiness moodlets from eating plants. Beware, as there are some plants that shouldn’t be eaten (like the negative ones from Outdoor Retreat).

Garden Planters

If you prefer the look of organized gardening, you may choose to have garden planters instead of just planting in the ground. If you decide to grow plants inside, you’re going to need to use a garden planter.

There are two types of garden planters that are available. Either a small, single plant circular planter, or a larger square four grid square planter. The larger planters can hold 4 smaller plants, or one large plant (i.e., a tree).

You can also use the woodworking table to craft garden planters of both sizes that look a bit more rustic than the build mode versions.

Seed Packets

Seed packets are the easiest way to get some plants into your sim’s inventory. These can be purchased either in build mode through the outdoor activities section, or through the computer under the order menu.

As you progress in the gardening skill, you’ll be able to unlock new seed packets that will have more rare items in them and will make you more money.
